Overton has gone 8-2 against Anselmo-Merna recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Overton Eagles will venture away from home to take on the Anselmo-Merna Coyotes at 6:00 p.m.
Overton is headed into the matchup out to prove that what happened against Southern Valley on Saturday (when they were outscored in every quarter) was just a minor bump in the road. Overton had to suffer through a 55-18 loss at the hands of Southern Valley. Overton hasn't had much luck with Southern Valley recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.
Braelyn Florell was Overton's leading scorer, having posted nine points. Halynn Hughes held things down on the boards with seven rebounds. She took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with two assists.
Meanwhile, in Friday's Canine Competition, Anselmo-Merna prevailed. They really took it to Ainsworth for the full four quarters, racking up a 62-26 victory. The contest was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 40-11.
Anselmo-Merna's win came from a few key players Overton will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Makenna Miller, who went 7 of 13 on her way to 19 points and five assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Rhianen Myers, who posted 14 points along with six assists and six boards.
Anselmo-Merna smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in 12 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Overton now has a losing record at 2-3. As for Anselmo-Merna, their win bumped their record up to 3-1.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Overton has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 48.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Anselmo-Merna struggles in that department as they've been averaging 43.5 boards. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Overton was able to grind out a solid victory over Anselmo-Merna in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, winning 46-36. The rematch might be a little tougher for Overton since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
