Mansfield and Wellsboro are an even 5-5 against one another since May of 2016, but likely not for long. The Tigers will head out to face off against the Hornets at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Mansfield will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
Mansfield's pitching crew heads into the matchup hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Monday. They walked away with a 5-0 win over Wyalusing Valley. Those five runs were actually the fewest the Tigers have put up all season, but given the result they're probably not too concerned.
Mansfield saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cooper Shaw, who went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI. Andy Hermansen was another, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Troy hit Wellsboro with a six-run first inning on Tuesday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Hornets lost 14-7 to the Trojans. The Hornets haven't had much luck with the Trojans recently, as the team has come up short the last six times they've met.
Wellsboro also got a good showing from Dylan Copp, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Those zero earned runs gave Copp a new career-low.
At the plate, Syler Pietrzyk was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two runs. He also got a hit, marking his first of the season. Another player making a difference was Gabe Cuneo, who got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs.
Mansfield's victory was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 9-1-1. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games. As for Wellsboro, their loss dropped their record down to 3-7.
Wellsboro's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Mansfield has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 6.7 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Wellsboro, though, as they've been averaging only 3.9 strikeouts. Will Mansfield keep running through batters, or will the Hornets buck the trend?
Mansfield took their victory against Wellsboro in their previous matchup back in March by a conclusive 12-2 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Tigers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
