Basketball Recap: Cooper Takes a Loss

If Cooper was riding high fresh off their 95-32 takedown of Pioneer Technology & Arts Academy last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Cooper Bulldogs were just a bucket shy of victory on Tuesday and fell 54-53 to the Cumby Trojans. The Bulldogs were up 29-15 in the second quarter but couldn't hold on to the lead.

When it comes to explaining why Cooper lost, don't look at John Ramos. Despite the final result, he went 5 for 11 on his way to 12 points along with five rebounds and five steals. Ramos has become a key player for Cooper: the team is 13-4 when he posts at least three steals, but 1-3 otherwise. Jequan Brown was another key player, dropping a double-double on ten points and 11 boards.

Even though they lost, Cooper smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in 13 consecutive matchups.

Leading Cumby to victory were Chett Vaughan and Chayton Vaughan. Chett dropped a double-double on 26 points and ten rebounds, while Chayton went 7 of 13 en route to 15 points in addition to eight steals and five boards. Chett is crushing it when it comes to points: he's scored at least 15 every time he's taken the court this season.

The defeat snapped Cooper's winning streak at four games and leaves them with a 14-7 record. As for Cumby, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games, which provided a nice bump to their 18-14 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Cooper has already played their next contest (against Pioneer Tech & Arts Academy), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing. Cumby will head out on the road to face off against Pioneer Technology & Arts Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Cumby is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 60.8 points per game this season.
