Caleb Swanigan's decommitment from Michigan State could equal jackpot for Cal

Talk heading into the McDonald's All-American game was that three of the nation's top recruits — Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) post Ivan Rabb, Wheeler (Marietta, Ga.) forward Jaylen Brown and Homestead (Fort Wayne, Ind.) center Caleb Swanigan — could all end up at the same college.

When Swanigan committed to Michigan State shortly after, that notion was blown up. Fast forward to today and now it appears a solid possibility again.

Swanigan decommitted from the Spartans and rumors are flying he could join Rabb and Brown, who each committed to Cal, in Berkeley.



Rabb was the first to commit to Cuonzo Martin on April 13. He told MaxPreps that night that indeed his relationship with Brown and Swanigan was close. He noted that Brown, who may be the most talented player from the Class of 2015, might surprise people with his choice.

"What people don't know about Jaylen Brown is that he's really down to Earth," Rabb said. "It's not all about him going to the NBA. He wants to be an NBA GM one day. … He and I connected very well."

When Brown announced his decision to join Rabb at Cal last week, most basketball experts were more than a little surprised. Cal has hardly been a West Coast power, let alone among the national elite, with a proven track record to attract 5-star players.

If Swanigan follows suit — he's apparently picking between Cal and Purdue — the Bears will land three of them from one class.

From the 247Sports top 2015 list, the 6-foot-7 Brown is No. 5, Rabb is No. 10 and the 6-8 Swanigan is No. 30. Rivals has them Nos. 3, 7 and 19, respectively.

Rabb isn't a loud or pushy sort. Exactly the opposite. He, Brown and Swanigan seemed to be cut from the same cloth, so they might all end up in Golden Bear blue cloth.



Martin has a strong, quiet presence, something that apparently translates well to these three big men. Don't be surprised if Swanigan does jump to Berkeley and that the trio spends up to two years trying to get Cal to at least the Final Four, something that appeared highly unlikely just a few months ago.
