Noah Gomez was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Chula Vista got a massive performance out of Gabriel Mendoza, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most runs Mendoza has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Joe Alterado, who went 4-for-5 with three RBI, one run, and one double.
Chula Vista always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .585. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Southwest SD never got on the board in their matchup last Saturday, but that sure wasn't the case in their game against High Tech CV on Saturday. They put the hurt on the Bruins with a sharp 12-2 victory. The result was nothing new for the Raiders, who have now won seven games by seven runs or more so far this season.
Aaron Diaz made a big impact no matter where he played. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Southwest SD is undefeated when he allows at most one earned run, but 6-8-1 otherwise. Diaz was also big at the plate, getting on base in two of his three plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base.
In other batting news, Elijah Lewis was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one stolen base. That home run marked the first that he has launched this season. Sebestian Martinez was another key player, going 1-for-4 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
Southwest SD now has a winning record of 9-8-1. As for Chula Vista, their record is now 9-6-2.
Chula Vista took their win against Southwest SD when the teams last played back in May of 2024 by a conclusive 10-3 score. Will the Spartans repeat their success, or do the Raiders have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
