Game recap: Carlsbad edged out by Artesia in shootout

In a back and forth game, Artesia (N.M.)'s offense came through to hand the the Bulldogs a 44-41 win.

The Cavemen pulled ahead on a Rodney Holcomb touchdown pass to Dillion Caddell, and subsequently went into halftime leading 27-24. The Bulldogs scored the winning points with a Trevor Eulenbach touchdown pass to Donovan Orosco that came in the fourth quarter.

Despite scoring 14 points in the third, Artesia still trailed by 3 points going into the fourth quarter. But six points in the fourth helped AHS pull out the victory.

The Bulldogs didn't take the lead for good until the the fourth quarter when Eulenbach thew a touchdown to Orosco.

Carlsbad's Holcomb played well. The junior quarterback threw three touchdowns, ran for one touchdown and kicked five extra points. His performance brought his touchdown total to six on the year.

Eulenbach stood out for Artesia in the win. The junior threw six touchdowns. He has now scored eight touchdowns on the season.



The victory is a complete turnaround from last season's game between these two teams, which CHS took, 48-21.

The defeat comes as a step back for Carlsbad, which notched a 38-13 victory over Alamogordo in its previous outing.

In a non-conference game next week Artesia (5-0) takes on Las Cruces, and Carlsbad (3-2) will go up against Rio Grande also in a non-conference game.
