Basketball Recap: Mapletown Maples vs. Geibel Catholic Gators
The Mapletown Maples's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their sixth straight loss. They took a 62-58 hit to the loss column at the hands of Geibel Catholic. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.
Geibel Catholic's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Tommy Kolencik led the charge by dropping a double-double on 22 points and 14 rebounds. Kolencik is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as he's now posted two or more in the last four games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Gary Tarbuk, who scored 24 points along with five assists and two steals.
Mapletown has traveled a rocky road recently having lost nine of their last ten matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-14 record this season. As for Geibel Catholic, their win ended a 12-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 1-19.
Mapletown will square off against the Greyhounds at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Monessen presents a significant challenge as they come into the match much higher ranked than the Maples in Pennsylvania (the Greyhounds are ranked 368th, while the Maples are ranked 750th). As for Geibel Catholic, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against the Trojans at 7:30 p.m.
