Baseball Game Preview: Gate City Blue Devils vs. Abingdon Falcons

Gate City is 0-10 against Abingdon since May of 2018 but things could change on Monday. The Blue Devils will look to defend their home field against the Falcons at 4:00 p.m. Both come into the game bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Gate City took a loss when they played away from home on Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Friday. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Lee a 2-0 shutout. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Blue Devils as it put an end to their three-game losing streak.

Allen Lane looked comfortable as he pitched 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Gate City is undefeated when Lane allows one or fewer earned runs, but 3-5 otherwise.

On the hitting side, Gate City's victory was truly a team effort as three different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Dylan Carter, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run. Those two hits gave Carter a new career-high.

Meanwhile, Abingdon waltzed into their contest on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. Everything went their way against the Wolfpack as they made off with a 12-0 win. Considering the Falcons have won eight matchups by more than five runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

Abingdon pushed their record up to 12-2 with the victory, which was their seventh straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.6 runs over those games. As for Gate City, they now have a winning record of 6-5.

Gate City might still be hurting after the 13-3 loss they got from Abingdon when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Blue Devils avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
