Basketball Recap: Deer Trail Comes Up Short

If Deer Trail was feeling good fresh off their 41-10 takedown of Cripple Creek-Victor last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Deer Trail Eagles had to suffer through a 52-23 loss at the hands of the Caliche Buffaloes. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 282nd, while the Buffaloes are ranked 109th).

Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Caliche to victory, but perhaps none more so than Hernandez Ava, who posted nine points in addition to eight boards and three steals. Those eight rebounds gave Ava a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Hallie Lewis, who put up 11 points along with six boards and five steals.

Deer Trail has been struggling recently as they've lost ten of their last 11 contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-10 record this season. The victory was the fourth in a row for Caliche, bringing their record for this year to 11-5.

Deer Trail didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 56-25 loss against Byers on the 11th. As for Caliche, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 67-19 win against Denver Waldorf on the 10th.
