Basketball Recap: Socrates Academy Comes Up Short

Socrates Academy was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They were four points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 50-46 heartbreaker at the hands of the Covenant Classical Warriors. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as the Owls came into the match with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 77th, while the Warriors are ranked 641st).

Despite the loss, Socrates Academy still got an impressive performance from JP Polburn, who dropped a double-double with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Polburn's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Niko Petriniotis, who went 5-for-10 on his way to 12 points in addition to five boards and three blocks.

Even though they lost, Socrates Academy was working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Covenant Classical only posted five assists.

Leading Covenant Classical to victory were Thomas Way and Ian Lejeune. Way posted 17 points, while Lejeune almost dropped a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Lejeune has been hot recently, having also posted two or more steals the last three times he's played.

Socrates Academy's loss dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Covenant Classical, their win bumped their record up to 4-11.

Socrates Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Covenant Classical, they are taking a road trip to square off against NorthPoint Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in NorthPoint Christian Academy's favor is that they have posted at least 55 points in their last seven games.
