Softball Game Preview: Mid Valley Spartans vs. Hughesville Spartans

Mid Valley will face off against Hughesville at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Mid Valley 1.2, Hughesville 3.9) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Mid Valley proved they can win big last Thursday (they won by 15) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past Lake-Lehman 6-4. The win continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Knights: they've now won three in a row.

Ava Hazelton spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned runs on five hits and racked up 13 Ks. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts any time she's pitched this season.

At the plate, Krista Cortazar was excellent, going 2-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Elise Larson was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double.

Meanwhile, Hughesville and Loyalsock Township squared off in some playoff action on Thursday, but Hughesville had to settle for second. They fell 5-0 to the Lancers. The Spartans' defeat signaled the end of their four-game winning streak.

Mid Valley's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-3-1. The road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.3 runs over those games. As for Hughesville, their loss dropped their record down to 16-6.
