Basketball Recap: Durango Starts Season with Loss on the Road

Durango had to start their season on the road on Monday, and it wasn't the start they were hoping for. They fell 56-48 to the Bayfield Wolverines. The Demons were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Wolverines apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in December of 2024.

When it comes to explaining why Durango lost, don't look at Kingston Kerlin. Despite the final result, he posted 20 points in addition to eight rebounds and four steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Taj Batiste, who had nine points and six boards.

Bayfield was led to victory by Hayes Malone and Cameron Queen. Malone shot 46% from the field on his way to 21 points and five rebounds, while Queen went 5-for-7 en route to 12 points and eight boards. Malone is also on a roll when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 40% in the last three games he's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Harrison Williams, who scored seven points and nine rebounds.

Bayfield now has a winning record of 2-1.

Coming up, Durango will be taking part in a tournament against Bloomfield at 10:00 a.m. on the 18th. As for Bayfield, they will head out on the road to face off against Windsor Charter Academy at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Wolverines will need to watch out since the Firebirds have now posted at least 55 points every time they've taken the court this season.
