Football Preview: St. Martin Yellow Jackets vs. Ocean Springs Greyhounds

St. Martin is 1-9 against Ocean Springs since October of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets will be playing at home against the Greyhounds at 7:00 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

St. Martin will bounce into Thursday's contest after beating Harrison Central, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Yellow Jackets took their matchup last Friday with ease, bagging a 50-13 win over the Red Rebels. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 27-7.

St. Martin found their leader in sophomore Seth Crockett, who rushed for 171 yards and four scores while picking up 9.5 yards per carry. Crockett is becoming a predictor of the Yellow Jackets' success: when he posts at least two rushing touchdowns the team is undefeated (and 1-3 when he doesn't). Dawsen Sullivan was another key player, rushing for 113 yards on only nine carries.

Ocean Springs' win came from a few key players St. Martin will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Solomon Baggett, who rushed for 86 yards and one touchdown on only five carries. The team also got some help courtesy of Sharroid Whitehead, who rushed for 51 yards and one TD.

On the defensive side of the ball, a lot of the credit has to go to Ocean Springs' defense and their three sacks. The team can thank three different players for their defensive prowess: Jacolby Bailey, Jax Westbrook, and Kyle Drawer, who each picked up one sack apiece. Thursday's contest might be decided on the ground. St. Martin has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 186.4 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Ocean Springs struggles in that department as they've been averaging 243.9 rushing yards. There's a good chance Thursday's matchup turns into a tough fight on the ground.

St. Martin was dealt a bruising 42-15 loss at the hands of Ocean Springs when the teams last played back in November of 2024. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point the Yellow Jackets were down 28-0.
