Softball Game Preview: Independence Falcons vs. Highland Scots

For the second straight game, Independence will face off against Highland. The Falcons will venture away from home to challenge the Scots at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. The last five games Independence has played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.

On Wednesday, Independence didn't have quite enough to beat Highland and fell 4-2. The Falcons have struggled against the Scots recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.

Destiny Serna spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 12 Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 11 consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Maylea Lutu was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI. Emilia Culbertson also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

The victory (which was Highland's third in a row) raised their record to 15-5-2. They've had to fight for that success though, as they only beat their opponents by an average of 1.33 runs across that stretch. As for Independence, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 8-8.

Friday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Independence hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .363. However, it's not like Highland struggles in that department as they've averaged .332. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
