Baseball Recap: Widefield Snags Eighth Win in Last Nine Games

Widefield hadn't done well against Mesa Ridge recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The Gladiators came out on top against the Grizzlies by a score of 6-1. Surprisingly, this marked the Gladiators' third straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

The team relied heavily on Haven Johnson, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI. Those two hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Braeden Mitton, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases and one run.

Widefield is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-8 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Mesa Ridge, their defeat dropped their record down to 8-12.

Widefield and Mesa Ridge could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Colorado Rankings. The Gladiators will square off against Discovery Canyon at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday with a big rank disadvantage (116 vs. 35). Meanwhile, Mesa Ridge (ranked 180th) will meet Pueblo County (ranked 15th) at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday.
