Baseball Recap: Mayfield Takes a Loss

Mayfield extended their losing streak to six on Wednesday, dropping their season record down to 4-12 in the process. They fell 5-1 to the Riverside Beavers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Beavers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 13-2 on Monday.

AJ Rogers, Jr was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out six over 5.1 innings pitched.

At the plate, Mayfield saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ben Koret, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases and one run.

As for Riverside, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-7 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.9 runs over those games.

On Riverside's side, Ethan Hay spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned run on two hits. Hay has become a key player for the Beavers: the team is 3-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 5-6 otherwise.

Looking ahead, Mayfield will face off against Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Riverside, they will be playing at home against Lake at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. The Blue Streaks' pitching crew has only allowed 3.1 runs per game this season, so the Beavers' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
