Preview: Discovery Canyon Thunder vs. Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks
The Discovery Canyon Thunder will be playing in front of their home fans against the Cheyenne Mountain Red-Tailed Hawks at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams took a loss in their last game, so they'll have plenty of motivation to get the 'W'.
Discovery Canyon has been a dominant force so far, but they're in the middle of a mini-slump at the moment. They lost to Lutheran at home by a decisive 62-43 margin on Friday. While losing is never fun, Discovery Canyon can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 77th, while Lutheran is ranked 11th).
Despite the defeat, Discovery Canyon saw an underclassman step up: Hugh Tarpenning scored 21 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. Tarpenning is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last six games he's played. Noah Eckles was another key contributor, scoring six points.
Meanwhile, Cheyenne Mountain's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their eighth straight loss. They fell 48-37 to Air Academy. Cheyenne Mountain has struggled against Air Academy recently, as their game on Friday was their fourth consecutive lost matchup.
Discovery Canyon's loss ended a six-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-5. As for Cheyenne Mountain, their defeat was their eighth straight at home, which bumped their record down to 1-14.
Everything went Discovery Canyon's way against Cheyenne Mountain in their previous meeting back in February of 2023 as Discovery Canyon made off with a 74-54 victory.
