Baseball Recap: Impact Academy of Arts & Technology Spartans vs. KIPP King Lions
Impact Academy of Arts & Technology extended their losing streak to six on Friday, dropping their season record down to 0-6 in the process. They lost 19-5 to the KIPP King Lions. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Lions this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 16-3 back in March.
As for KIPP King, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 7-4. The result was nothing new for the Lions, who have now won five matchups by six runs or more so far this season.
For KIPP King's part, Gabriel Acevedo was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 1.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Acevedo has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, four runs, and one double.
In other batting news, KIPP King got a massive performance out of Xavier Gardley, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs. Gardley is becoming a predictor of the Lions' success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is 5-1 (and 2-3 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Richard Huerta, who went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, four RBI, and two runs.
Impact Academy of Arts & Technology and KIPP King will both get a bit of extra prep time before their next games. The next time the Spartans see the field they'll take on Leadership Public Schools Richmond at 4:00 p.m. on the 30th. As for KIPP King, their break will end when they face Mare Island Tech Academy at 4:00 p.m. on the 23rd.
