Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Samaris Pena and Bella Begay Lead La Joya Community to Victory

La Joya Community lost to Washington back in January, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Thursday. The La Joya Community Fighting Lobos took down the Washington Rams 44-25. The Fighting Lobos pushed the score to 40-16 by the end of the third, a deficit the Rams cut but never quite recovered from.

La Joya Community was led to victory by Bella Begay and Samaris Pena. Begay dropped a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Pena posted 14 points in addition to seven boards and five steals. Begay has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more rebounds the last 19 times she's played. Another player making a difference was Destiny Sanchez, who scored eight points along with five boards and five steals.

La Joya Community smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 15 offensive rebounds in four consecutive matches.

Several Rams players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Ilana Bread, who put up six points.

La Joya Community's record is now 5-15. As for Washington, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-16.
