Basketball Recap: Trinity Sumpter and Bri Smith Secure Win for Socastee

Socastee lost to Conway back in February of 2024, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Friday. The Socastee Braves secured a 49-43 W over the Conway Tigers. Given the Braves' advantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 77th, while the Tigers are ranked 200th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Leading Socastee to victory were Bri Smith and Trinity Sumpter. Smith went 7 of 17 en route to 19 points, while Sumpter dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds. That's the most points Sumpter has posted since back in November of 2024.

Socastee smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their offensive board total in three consecutive matches.

Conway's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Rebecca Hemingway, who almost dropped a double-double on 17 points and nine boards. With that strong performance, Hemingway is now averaging an impressive 2.3 steals per game. Ahchiya Hill was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.

Socastee's record is now 11-8. As for Conway, they are on a 16-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-14.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Socastee will challenge St. James at 6:00 p.m. on January 24th. As for Conway, a feisty cat fight is on tap when the Conway Tigers challenge the Carolina Forest Panthers at 6:00 p.m. on January 24th. Carolina Forest will roll in looking for their eighth straight win, something Conway surely won't give up without a fight.
