The Cumberland Clippers will challenge the Cranston West Falcons at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Cumberland is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.2 runs per game this season.
Cumberland had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 20-run drubbing they dealt Mt. Hope on Thursday. The Clippers put the hurt on the Huskies with a sharp 21-1 win. The victory continues a trend for the Clippers in their matchups with the Huskies: they've now won three in a row.
Cumberland got a great performance from Marcus Gomes as he didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. Gomes has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks any time he's pitched this season.
On the hitting side, Andrew Nocera and Micah Cousineau did most of the damage at the plate: Nocera went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Cousineau went 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave Cousineau a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brody Enos, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base.
Cumberland always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .585. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
Meanwhile, Cranston West faced East Providence in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Wednesday. The Falcons fell just short of the Townies by a score of 4-2. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Falcons have suffered since April 25, 2024.
Logan Taylor spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and racked up seven Ks.
At the plate, Elan Santana was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-4 with one home run.
Cumberland's win was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-4. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for Cranston West, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-8 record this season.
Cranston West's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Cumberland hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .325. It's a different story for Cranston West, though, as they've only averaged .252. Will they be able to contain Cumberland's hitters?
Cumberland was able to grind out a solid win over Cranston West in their previous meeting last Tuesday, winning 8-3. Do the Clippers have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Falcons turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
