Softball Recap: Alcorn Central Comes Up Short

Alcorn Central extended their losing streak to three on Friday, dropping their season record down to 13-13 in the process. They fell 10-5 to the Nettleton Tigers. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Tigers this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 11-5 on Thursday.

Journey Phillips was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI. Lexie Dixon was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one triple and one run.

As for Nettleton, they pushed their record up to 27-3-1 with the win, which was their 17th straight on the road dating back to last season. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games.

On Nettleton's side, Bailey Payne made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. Payne has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in nine consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run. That's the most hits she has posted since back in February.

In other batting news, Zyah Gunter was a standout: she got on base in three of her five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one double. Another player making a difference was Chloe Humble, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI.

Alcorn Central does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Nettleton, they will take on Winona at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Nettleton will need to watch out since Winona has now posted at least ten runs in their last four games.
