Baseball Recap: Pomona Wins Going Away Against Bassett

Pomona won the last time they faced Bassett and things went their way on Thursday too. The Red Devils blew past the Olympians 15-1. The result was nothing new for the Red Devils, who have now won seven matches by eight runs or more so far this season.

Vince Huguez looked comfortable as he pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Pomona is 4-1 when Huguez allows one or fewer earned runs, but 4-5 otherwise.

At the plate, Leo Luna and Michael De La Vega did most of the damage at the plate: Luna got on base in three of his four plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while De La Vega went 1-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave De La Vega a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Michael Huguez, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs and one RBI.

Pomona always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Pomona's win ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 8-6. As for Bassett, they are on an 18-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-15.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Pomona will take on La Puente at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Warriors have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.38 runs per game on average), something the Red Devils will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Bassett, they will venture away from home to square off against Edgewood at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Olympians will need to watch out since the Lions have now posted at least ten runs in their last three contests.
