Football Recap: Mt. Vernon Marauders vs. New Castle Trojans
Mt. Vernon waltzed into their match on Friday with three straight wins... but they left with four. Everything went their way against the New Castle Trojans as they made off with a 45-21 victory. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Marauders also won the last time the pair played back in September of 2023.
Ryker Baer had a dynamite game for Mt. Vernon, picking up 153 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Mt. Vernon wouldn't let New Castle keep a hold of the ball as they managed to force three fumbles. It was truly a group effort as Gavin Joy, Robert Dodson, and Christian Kiptoo picked up one apiece. Dodson also made four total tackles, which is notable because Mt. Vernon is 2-1 when he posts at least three total tackles, but 2-3 otherwise.
Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Mt. Vernon was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 269 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as New Castle only rushed for 67.
Despite the loss, New Castle still got an impressive performance from Caleb Clapp, who rushed for 66 yards and two touchdowns, and also picked up 78 receiving yards. The bulk of those receiving yards came from one huge play: a catch that gained an incredible 77 yards. Carson Bell was another key player, having thrown for 318 yards and onetouchdown.
The win got Mt. Vernon back to even at 4-4. As for New Castle, the loss snapped their winning streak at three games and leaves them with a 4-3 record.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Mt. Vernon will play host again on Friday to welcome Shelbyville, where kickoff is scheduled at 7:00 p.m. Mt. Vernon is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 26.7 points per game this season. As for New Castle, they will host New Palestine at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in New Palestine's favor is that they have posted at least 31 points in their last five games.
