Baseball Game Preview: Cumberland Clippers vs. Mt. Hope Huskies

The Cumberland Clippers are taking a road trip to square off against the Mt. Hope Huskies at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. Mt. Hope took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Cumberland, who comes in off a win.

Cumberland is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: East Providence, who was ranked fifth at the time (Cumberland was ranked third). The Clippers narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Townies 6-5.

Tyler Hurteau and Josh Lyon did most of the damage at the plate: Hurteau got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI, while Lyon went a perfect 3-for-3 with one double and one RBI. Those three hits gave Lyon a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Chase Austin, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Meanwhile, Mt. Hope was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their sixth straight loss. They were two runs away from ending the streak, but they lost an 8-6 heartbreaker at the hands of Barrington. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat the Huskies have suffered since April 1st.

Rhys Davies was cooking despite his team's loss, going a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. Trace Dubois was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.

Cumberland has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.4 runs over those games. As for Mt. Hope, their loss dropped their record down to 2-11.

Everything went Cumberland's way against Mt. Hope in their previous matchup back in May of 2024, as Cumberland made off with a 9-1 win. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Clippers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
