Softball Recap: Notre Dame Prep Picks Up Ninth Consecutive Victory

Notre Dame Prep came tearing into Friday's matchup with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5.6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They walked away with a 5-2 victory over the Campo Verde Coyotes. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 11-9 two weeks ago.

Marley Caldwell was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 16 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one double and one RBI.

In other batting news, Maggie Spokas and Kendall Gillham did most of the damage at the plate: Spokas went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run, while Gillham went 1-for-3 with one home run and two runs. That's the most runs Gillham has posted since back in March.

Notre Dame Prep's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-6. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Campo Verde, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 10-19.

Looking ahead, Notre Dame Prep will challenge Xavier College Prep at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Saints 2.5, the Gators 1.8) so any runs scored will be well earned. Campo Verde does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
