Baseball Recap: Brimfield's Winning Streak Snapped at Seven Games

Brimfield dropped their record down to 12-4-1 on Saturday, which also ended the team's seven-game streak of wins. They fell 13-10 to the Illinois Valley Central Grey Ghosts. The pitching woes were uncharacteristic for the Indians, who until this matchup were averaging 3.94 runs allowed.

Kaeden Schatsiek and Layne Johnson stepped up to the plate in a big way. Schatsiek went 2-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Johnson went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and two RBI. That home run marked the first that Johnson has launched this season.

As for Illinois Valley Central, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-6 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games.

On Illinois Valley Central's side, Keegan Schol made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out six batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off three hits. Schol has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brynden Coventry, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Sam Griggs, who went 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.

Coincidentally, Brimfield and Illinois Valley Central will both be playing Illini West the next time they take the field. The Grey Ghosts will head out to face the Chargers at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, while the Indians will play them later in the day, at 2:00 p.m.
