Basketball Recap: Moffat Takes a Loss

After a string of four wins, Moffat's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They were dealt a 64-23 loss at the hands of the Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds. The Cowboys lost against the Thunderbirds in their previous head to head back in February of 2024, too, but the margin this time around was even wider than the 50-36 score last time.

Despite the defeat, Moffat had strong showings from Chase Shellabarger, who posted six points and ten boards, and Preston Heater, who put up 13 points and six rebounds. Heater is also crushing it when it comes to steals: he's grabbed at least two every time he's taken the court this season.

Even though they lost, Moffat smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 13 offensive rebounds in four consecutive games.

Moffat's loss was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 5-4. As for Sangre de Cristo, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season.

Moffat won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Aguilar at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Moffat is facing Aguilar at the right time seeing as Aguilar is stuck on a five-game losing streak. Sangre de Cristo has already played their next game (against Del Norte), but no score has been uploaded at the time of writing.
