Baseball Game Preview: Oxford Chargers vs. Lake Cormorant

The Oxford Chargers will challenge Lake Cormorant at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. Lake Cormorant took a loss in their last game and will be looking to turn the tables on Oxford, who comes in off a win.

Oxford made up a huge gap compared to their last game against Lewisburg, but they still couldn't quite topple them. Oxford put the hurt on Lewisburg with a sharp 10-0 win on Friday. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Chargers' hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.

Fisher Giles was a standout: he scored two runs while going 2-for-3. That's the most runs he has posted over his last eight matchups. Bowen Vaughn was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-2.

Oxford was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .538. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Lake Cormorant didn't have quite enough to beat Center Hill on Friday and fell 4-3.

Derrin Randle was huge no matter where he played even without the win. On the mound, he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 11 over 6.1 innings pitched. Randle was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one home run, three RBI, and one double.

With the victory, Oxford broke their three-game losing streak and moved their record to 8-11. As for Lake Cormorant, they have been struggling recently as they've lost four of their last five contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 6-8 record this season.

Oxford took their win against Lake Cormorant when the teams last played back in March of 2017 by a conclusive 11-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Oxford since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
