Basketball Recap: Wilby Falls Despite Big Games from Ja'nell Saunders and Raine Upchurch

Wilby lost against Seymour back in December of 2023 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Friday. The Wilby Wildcats came up short against the Seymour Wildcats, falling 59-34. Wilby has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Wilby's loss came despite strong showings from Raine Upchurch and Ja'Nell Saunders. Upchurch posted 21 points and three steals, while Saunders put up three points in addition to eight boards and seven blocks. That was a full 61.8% of Wilby's points, marking the 14th time in a row she's scored more than a third of the team's points.

Seymour's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Mia Cunningham, who went 10 for 18 en route to 20 points along with six rebounds and three blocks. The dominant performance also gave Cunningham a new career-high in assists (four). Skylar Barton was another key player, dropping a double-double on 13 points and 15 boards.

Wilby's defeat dropped their record down to 9-7. As for Seymour, their victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-3.

Wilby has already played their next match, a 57-51 win against Waterbury Career Academy on the 4th. As for Seymour, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 60-18 victory against Platt RVT on the 3rd.
