Baseball Recap: Austin-East Comes Up Short

Austin-East extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 29 on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 0-22 in the process. They lost 26-2 to the Washburn Pirates. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Roadrunners of the 11-1 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Austin-East saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jeffrey Minor, who went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

As for Washburn, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 13-8-1. Considering they have won seven matchups by more than eight runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.

On Washburn's side, Isaac Southerland and Matthew Harville made a big impact no matter where they played. Throwing, Southerland pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Meanwhile, Harville tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. What's more, he posted five strikeouts, the most he's had over his last five games. At the plate, Southerland went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run, while Harville got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two stolen bases and three runs. Harville has become a key player for Washburn: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 6-8-1 otherwise.

In other batting news, Washburn got a massive performance out of Landry Coffey, who got on base in four of his five plate appearances with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. The Pirates are undefeated when Coffey posts two or more runs, but 7-8-1 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Bryson Coffman, who went 2-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.

While Austin-East had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
