Baseball Game Preview: Morton Potters vs. LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers

The Morton Potters will square off against the LaSalle-Peru Cavaliers at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their games after big wins in their previous games.

LaSalle-Peru will be up against a hot Morton squad: the team just extended their winning streak to five. The Potters never let Canton get on the board and left with a 7-0 victory on Monday.

Not much got past Ryan Schaffnit, who gave up just a hit and racked up 11 Ks to keep Canton off the board. Schaffnit also tossed no walks, which is notable because Morton is 3-1 when he allows at most one walk, but 3-4 otherwise.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Andrew Brooks, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Those three runs gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Brandon Sieben, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-2.

Meanwhile, LaSalle-Peru won against Mendota on Thursday with nine runs and they decided to stick to that run total again on Wednesday. The Cavaliers blew past Newark 9-1. The result was nothing new for the Cavaliers, who have now won four matches by eight runs or more so far this season.

Morton's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 6-5. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for LaSalle-Peru, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 6-4 record this season.

Morton was able to grind out a solid win over LaSalle-Peru in their previous matchup back in April of 2023, winning 9-4. Will the Potters repeat their success, or do the Cavaliers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
