Basketball Recap: Ben Davis Falls Short Against Ranked Cathedral

On Friday, Ben Davis faced Cathedral in a battle between two of the state's top teams. The Ben Davis Giants fell 66-53 to the Cathedral Fighting Irish. The Giants have been going strong on the season, but this is now their second defeat in a row.

Several Giants players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Tavion Williams, who posted eight points and seven rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Williams a new career-high in assists (four). Another player making a difference was Kaleb Milan, who had eight points.

Even though they lost, Ben Davis smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 12 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in four consecutive matchups.

Cathedral got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Julien Smith out in front who went 6-for-13 to rack up 19 points and five boards. Smith is also on a roll when it comes to three-point shooting accuracy, as he's posted one of at least 50% in the last three games he's played. Lebron Gough was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with 11 points and nine assists.

Ben Davis' loss dropped their record down to 15-7. As for Cathedral, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 17-4.

Looking ahead, Ben Davis will be playing at home against Indianapolis Crispus Attucks at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Cathedral, they have already played their next contest, a 70-51 win against Male on the 22nd.
