Basketball Game Preview: Spearfish Spartans vs. Mitchell Kernels

Spearfish hasn't had much luck against Mitchell recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. Having just played yesterday, the Spearfish Spartans will head out on the road to face off against the Mitchell Kernels at 1:30 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Spearfish comes in on four and Mitchell on eight.

On Friday, Spearfish was able to grind out a solid win over Huron, taking the game 62-52.

Meanwhile, Mitchell got the win against Sturgis Brown on Friday by a conclusive 50-30. Given the Kernels' advantage in MaxPreps' South Dakota basketball rankings (they are ranked 18th, while the Scoopers are ranked 87th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Spearfish pushed their record up to 9-4 with the victory, which was their sixth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.7 points over those games. As for Mitchell, their record now sits at 12-2.

Spearfish came up short against Mitchell in their previous matchup back in March of 2024, falling 54-43. Can Spearfish avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
