Basketball Recap: Contee Smithers Jr. Key Part of Team Effort in Royals Win

The Cristo Rey Royals earned a 60-48 win over the Fredericksburg Christian Eagles on Tuesday. The Royals pushed the score to 49-29 by the end of the third, a deficit the Eagles cut but never quite recovered from.

Cristo Rey's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Contee Smithers Jr., who dropped a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Jemell Smith was another key player, shooting 50% from the field on his way to 13 points along with eight boards and six assists.

Cristo Rey was working as a unit and finished the game with 13 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since the start of last season.

Cristo Rey has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it.

Looking ahead, Cristo Rey will square off against Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Fredericksburg Christian, they will be playing at home against Richmond Christian at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday.
