Basketball Recap: Elkhorn North Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

Elkhorn North lost to Waverly back in January of 2024, but they didn't allow them the same satisfaction on Friday. Elkhorn North walked away with a 53-43 win over the Waverly Vikings. Given Elkhorn North's advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked ninth, while Waverly is ranked 175th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Waverly's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Brady Schieffer, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Isaac Clarke, who posted eight points and eight boards.

The victory made it two in a row for Elkhorn North and bumps their season record up to 13-3. As for Waverly, they have also traveled a rocky road recently having lost ten of their last 11 games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-14 record this season.

Elkhorn North will venture away from home to square off against Mount Michael Benedictine at 7:15 p.m. on Thursday. Mount Michael Benedictine is on a five-game streak of home wins, Elkhorn North a six-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season)-- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court. As for Waverly, they will welcome Gretna East at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Gretna East is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 58.5 points per game this season.
