In a battle of high school football heavyweights, John
Curtis (River Ridge, La.), ranked No. 20 in the Xcellent 25, prevailed over No. 5
Karr (New Orleans) 38-33 thanks to a huge night from running back
George Moreira.
Moreira plunged into the end zone from four yards out with less than 30 seconds to play to give Curtis a late go-ahead score and thwart a stunning comeback attempt by Karr.
Curtis clung to a 30-27 lead in the fourth quarter before Karr dynamic senior
Devante Noil connected with receiver
Glenn Irons for the second time to give Karr a 33-30 lead.
Karr could not take advantage of a Curtis fumble and the Patriots had one final opportunity that was capped off by Moreira's third touchdown run to give the Patriots a wild win.
For a while, it looked as if one of the biggest games in Louisiana this season was going down the route of a blowout.
Two quick Moreira touchdowns and a safety allowed Curtis to race to a 16-0 lead.
Noil and Karr refused to go down without a fight. Three touchdown passes, including two to
Jeriah Tolbert later, helped Karr narrow the deficit to 30-27 at the half.
The electric Noil would throw for a fourth score, the go-ahead touchdown pass to Irons, but in the end, Curtis' methodical ground game proved to be too much.
With the victory, Curtis moves to 4-1, with the team's only loss coming at the hands of Florida power St. Thomas Aquinas. It will be challenged again next weekend in a matchup against
Leonard Fournette and
St. Augustine (New Orleans)Karr falls to 2-1 on the season and faces Cox next Friday.
