Softball Recap: Gibault Catholic Gets the Win

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Nashville, Gibault Catholic was happy to have turned things around on Monday. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the New Athens Yellow Jackets. For the Hawks, this counts as revenge for the 7-3 victory the Yellow Jackets walked away with the last time they faced one another back in March of 2025.

Chloe Lancaster was a major factor no matter where she played. She tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Lauren Lanham and Claire Kessler did most of the damage at the plate: Lanham got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run and one RBI, while Kessler went 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Gibault Catholic's win bumped their record up to 8-10. As for New Athens, their defeat was their fifth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 1-11.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming matchups. Gibault Catholic will square off against Dupo at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Hawks' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Tigers have averaged an impressive 7.2 runs per game this season. As for New Athens, they will challenge Valmeyer at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Pirates have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 14.7 runs per game on average), something the Yellow Jackets will no doubt try to take advantage of.
