Softball Game Preview: Mattanawcook Lynx vs. Houlton Shiretowners

Mattanawcook has gone a perfect 9-0 against Houlton recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Lynx will look to defend their home field against the Shiretowners at 4:00 p.m. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.

The scorekeeper got an easy start on Thursday as neither Mattanawcook nor Dexter made it on the board until the fifth inning. The Lynx's pitcher stepped up to hand the Tigers a 7-0 shutout. The result was nothing new for the Lynx, who have now won five matches by six runs or more so far this season.

Julianna Cloukey made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run while striking out seven over seven innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run. That stolen base was her first of the season.

In other batting news, Megan House was excellent, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Kalista Lazo was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run.

Meanwhile, Houlton waltzed into their game on Monday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They were the clear victors by a 13-3 margin over the Vikings. While the Shiretowners didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-9), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Mattanawcook is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games. As for Houlton, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.

Mattanawcook skirted past Houlton 8-6 in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Do the Lynx have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Shiretowners turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
