Burlington hasn't had much luck against Melrose recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Red Devils will face off against the Red Raiders at 5:30 p.m. Melrose took a loss in their last match and will be looking to turn the tables on Burlington, who comes in off a win.
On Friday, Burlington made easy work of Bedford and carried off a 3-0 victory. The win continues a trend for the Red Devils in their matchups with the Buccaneers: they've now won four in a row.
The 3-0 score doesn't show just how dominant Burlington was: they took every set by at least 12 points. The final score came out to 25-9, 25-13, 25-12.
Burlington's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Lexie Carmody, who had seven digs and two aces. That's the most aces Carmody has posted since back in September. Sia Ganapathy also deserves some recognition as she posted her first assists of the season.
Meanwhile, Melrose lost 3-0 to Duxbury on Saturday.
While Melrose had to settle for second, they sure made a game of it, scoring at least 18 points in every set they played. The match finished with set scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-18.
Despite the loss, Melrose saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Sadie Smith had 20 assists and ten digs. Smith has been hot for a while, having posted 14 or more assists the last 12 times she's played. Sabine Wenzel was another key player, getting 11 kills.
Melrose's defeat dropped their record down to 11-6. As for Burlington, their victory bumped their record up to 13-4.
Burlington beat Melrose 3-1 in their previous matchup back in September. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Red Devils since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
