Baseball Game Preview: Poquoson Islanders vs. New Kent Trojans

The Poquoson Islanders will venture away from home to challenge the New Kent Trojans at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Poquoson 3.8, New Kent 1.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Poquoson barely beat Bruton the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. The Islanders put the hurt on the Panthers with a sharp 11-1 win on Friday. That ten run margin sets a new team best for the Islanders this season.

Meanwhile, New Kent had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 9.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Friday. They never let the Lions get on the board and left with a 9-0 victory. Surprisingly, this marked the Trojans' fourth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Jonah Sorrell tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run while striking out eight over six innings pitched. Those eight strikeouts gave him a new career-high.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Michael Hetzel, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two RBI. Grayson Hobson also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

New Kent hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Warhill struck out eight times.

New Kent pushed their record up to 8-1 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road. Those road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.8 runs over those games. As for Poquoson, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 5-3.
