Basketball Recap: Maize's Higher State Rank on Full Display on Friday

Maize won the last time they faced Garden City and things went their way on Friday too. The Maize Eagles walked away with a 64-51 win over the Garden City Buffaloes. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 69th, while the Buffaloes are ranked 216th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

It was another big night for Alec Grill, who went 9 for 16 on his way to 22 points and three steals. Kingston Lerma was another key player, as he made all 5 shots he took for 12 points.

Maize is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 7-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 60.8 points per game. As for Garden City, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-8.

Maize has already played their next matchup, an 85-69 loss against Northwest on the 25th. As for Garden City, they will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Dodge City at 7:30 p.m. on February 4th.
