Softball Game Preview: Eagle Mustangs vs. Rocky Mountain Grizzlies

Eagle and Rocky Mountain are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2021, but likely not for long. The Mustangs will square off against the Grizzlies at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Eagle is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.4 runs per game this season.

Eagle is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Idaho's top teams: Timberline, who was ranked second at the time (Eagle was ranked eighth). The Mustangs sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the Wolves on Tuesday. The victory continues a trend for the Mustangs in their matchups with the Wolves: they've now won four in a row.

Peyton Bargen made a splash no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out ten batters over eight innings while giving up four earned runs off seven hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run.

In other batting news, Aly Vieira was excellent, scoring a run while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Erin Thoreson, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, Rocky Mountain came up short against Kuna on Tuesday and fell 6-1. The loss continues a trend for the Grizzlies in their meetings with the Kavemen: they've now lost five in a row.

Eagle's record now sits at 10-4. As for Rocky Mountain, their defeat dropped their record down to 11-8.

Eagle couldn't quite finish off Rocky Mountain when the teams last played back in May of 2024 and fell 16-14. Can the Mustangs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
