Riley Harman spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on five hits and racked up 14 Ks. He is becoming a predictor of Whitko's success: when he posts at least ten strikeouts the team is undefeated (and 9-13 when he doesn't).
On the hitting side, Chandler Cox was excellent, going 1-for-4 with one home run.
Meanwhile, Adams Central got the win against Woodlan on Thursday by a conclusive 10-2.
Cade Van De Weg made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Max Byerly was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases and two runs. Hayden Bluhm was another key player, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
Adams Central kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They are a perfect 10-0 when they post 11 or more hits.
Whitko now has a winning record of 14-13. As for Adams Central, their win bumped their record up to 14-9.
Saturday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Whitko hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .335. However, it's not like Adams Central struggles in that department as they've averaged .319. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Whitko couldn't quite get it done against Adams Central in their previous meeting on May 2nd as they fell 3-0. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
