League recap: Charlotte Catholic tops South Mecklenburg to extend winning streak

4A Conference 4 recap October 22, 2013

Adding to the longest winning streak in 4A Conference 4 this week, Charlotte Catholic beat South Mecklenburg 42-6. The win marks fourth in a row for the the Cougars.

Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology moved up to 143 from 173 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in the league. The Cardinal were able to move up by defeating Harding University 49-14.

Providence's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Caleb York threw for 198 yards and Austin Proehl had 134 yards receiving. On the ground Brian Mattar chipped in 124 yards. Derek Brouse helped Providence's passing attack out by catching 6 balls for 45 yards.

Mattar was the best running back in the league this week. He ran for 124 yards on 8 carries as the Panthers beat Ardrey Kell. Giovanni Gonzales also contributed to the rushing game with 107 yards on the ground.

Leading 4A Conference 4 in both passing and receiving yards, Providence's York and Proehl have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-2 quarterback York has thrown for 1,275 yards this season, while Proehl has 58 catches for 834 yards. Elijah Hood from Charlotte Catholic leads the league in rushing with 1,401 yards.

The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between Jim Oddo's team and West Mecklenburg. The Cougars enters the game ranked eighth in the state, while the Hawks ranks 15th.

The Sabres lost to Charlotte Catholic 42-6 last week, the largest margin of any game.
