Basketball Recap: Deer Trail Eagles vs. Burlington Cougars
Deer Trail was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their 28th straight loss dating back to last season. They took a blow against the Burlington Cougars, falling 58-18. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Eagles of the 73-27 defeat they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in February of 2024.
Despite the loss, Deer Trail saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Chauncy Gudenkauf posted 11 points. That was a full 61.1% of Deer Trail's points, marking the 12th time in a row Gudenkauf has put up more than a third of the team's points.
Burlington was led to victory by Weston Schaal and Rowdy Humrich. Schaal went 9-for-14 en route to 19 points in addition to eight boards and three steals, while Humrich dropped a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds. Schaal is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in each of the last three games he's played. Adan Lopez-Mitchell was another key player, putting up eight points.
Deer Trail's defeat dropped their record down to 0-20. As for Burlington, their win bumped their record up to 6-12.
Coming up, Deer Trail will welcome Elbert at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Burlington, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, an 81-44 loss against Simla on the 21st.
