Softball Game Preview: Wellington Dukes vs. Columbia Raiders

The Wellington Dukes will face off against the Columbia Raiders at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. Wellington has given up an average of 6.6 runs per game this season, but Monday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.

Wellington came up short against Edison on Wednesday, falling 14-6.

Wellington saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Mallory Pickering, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Pickering also hit two doubles, marking her first of the season.

Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last contest, Columbia made sure to put some runs up on the board against Washington on Saturday. The Raiders had just enough and edged out the Tigers 10-9. While the Raiders didn't have the best season last year (they finished 5-9), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

The team relied heavily on Bree Heidecker, who scored three runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Natalie Miller, who scored a run and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Columbia's victory bumped their record up to 5-1. As for Wellington, their defeat dropped their record down to 3-3-1.

Monday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Wellington has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .480. However, it's not like Columbia struggles in that department as they've averaged .598. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
