Legendary De La Salle leader Bob Ladouceur edged out for top spot by Maryville's George Quarles.
There was a time in his high school football coaching career when George Quarles of Maryville (Tenn.) was a few games over .500 (10-7) and had lost five straight games, including four to start the 2000 season. The current Furman assistant coach went 240-9 over the rest of his career before leaving Maryville in 2016 as the winningest football coach in high school football history.
Quarles, with a .940 winning percentage (250-16) leads MaxPreps' list of the Top 100 high school football coaches with the highest winning percentage. Coaches need to have at least 200 wins to qualifiy. Quarles edges De La Salle's (Concord, Calif.) Bob Ladouceur (399-25-3) by two-thousandths of a percentage point for first place. Ladouceur won 93.8 percent of his games to Quarles' 94 percent.
Quarles and Ladouceur are two of five coaches who have won 90 percent of their games. Others include John Roderique of Webb City (Mo.), Gary Joseph of Katy (Texas) and Wiley Allred of Royal (Royal City).
Other interesting names on the list include Joe and Jack Morris of Mayfield (Ky.). Jack, the father, won 254 games in his career, lost 50 and tied two. Joe Morris, the son, coaches Mayfield now and he enters the 2020 season with a slightly better percentage, but two less wins, with a record of 252-50-2.
Valdosta (Ga.), the school with the most wins in national high school history, has two coaches on the list: Nick Hyder and Wright Bazemore.
