Point Loma is 1-9 against Cathedral Catholic since March of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Thursday. The Pointers are taking a road trip to challenge the Dons at 4:00 p.m. Point Loma is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.4 runs per game this season.
Point Loma came out on top against Christian on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run fourth inning. The Pointers took their match against the Patriots 7-3. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Pointers.
Ella Poulin spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and two unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up eight Ks.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Bella Lopez, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. What's more, she posted two RBI, the most she's had since back in March. Annika Isaacson was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Cathedral Catholic was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their third straight loss. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 4-3 heartbreaker at the hands of Patrick Henry. That's two games in a row now that the Dons have lost by just one run.
Cathedral Catholic also let their pitcher toss all seven innings and she was also dialed-in: Mimi Botticelli gave up four earned runs on three hits and racked up ten Ks.
On the hitting side, Anna Janis made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple. Another player making a difference was Nia Talatiana, who went 2-for-3 with one triple.
Point Loma's record is now 18-5-1. As for Cathedral Catholic, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-9.
Fans could be in store for some top-tier slugging on Thursday. Point Loma hasn't had any problems when it comes to power this season, having averaged 1 home runs per game. However, it's not like Cathedral Catholic struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 0.4 home runs. With so much power on both teams, it'll be down to the pitchers to keep the mound locked down.
Point Loma suffered a grim 13-4 defeat to Cathedral Catholic in their previous meeting back in April. Can the Pointers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
