Baseball Game Recap: Pearl-Cohn Firebirds vs. Stratford Spartans

Pearl-Cohn extended their losing streak to five on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 1-14 in the process. They might be feeling deja-vu: they lost 8-5 to the Stratford Spartans, which was the same score (and result) they got the week prior. The Firebirds were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Spartans apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2023.

As for Stratford, their victory was their first in the district, bumping their district record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 5-4. The game was the first time they have beaten Pearl-Cohn on their field since April 25, 2022.

For Stratford's part, Cal Brock made a big impact no matter where he played. He tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Brock also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Stratford is 3-1 when he allows at most two earned runs, but 2-3 otherwise. Brock was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Demonte Morrow was incredible, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases and three runs. He has become a key player for Stratford: the team is undefeated when he posts at least two runs, but 2-4 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Teroz Dowell, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI and one double.

Looking ahead, Pearl-Cohn will challenge Hume-Fogg at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The Firebirds' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Blue Knights have averaged an impressive 7.6 runs per game this season. As for Stratford, they will square off against Whites Creek at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
